Willowbank Continues To Harness Drag Racings Finest
Queensland's Willowbank Raceway continues to accrue numerous milestones despite the drag racing facility enjoying a designated off-season break.
A spiraling participation rate in regular grassroots activities was typified recently when more than 300 drivers and riders were involved in regular Saturday afternoon Test 'n' Tune activities.
The huge entry list was bolstered by the appearance of the M onster Street Car Club and Harley Davidson Owners Group.
Making for a momentous two days of weekend Willowbank fare, 'Mopar Sunday', a specialised concept which began at the Raceway in 2004, also featured a massive turn out of Chrysler, Valiant and Dodge vehicles.
"We had Mopar fans and car owners from all over Australia attend and the signs are very strong that we will continue to grow over coming years," said Mopar Sunday Coordinator Sam Tatton.
"Fans were treated to a full day of drag racing, car show and shine, a dyno competition, a swap meet plus commercial traders were also on site, so there was something for everyone.
"The vehicles on show ranged from Chrysler Valiants, Valiant Charger''s, Dodge Challenger''s and Charger''s, Plymouth Duster''s and Dodge Daytona''s.
"There were also many modern mopars including Chrysler 300C, new Jeeps, Dodge Rams and Vipers and many Chrysler PT Cruiser''s.
"A new suite of Chrysler models, vir tually off the factory floor, were displayed by Leo Muller Chrysler Jeep Dodge and Albion Chrysler Jeep Dodge of Brisbane and this proved a real head turner for everyone.
"The amazing Dodge Nitro 4WD, Sebring 4-Door Sedan and the incredible range of Jeep 4WD''s really complemented all the Mopar favourites."
The magnificent response to core, grassroots activities at Willowbank Raceway is music to the ears of officials, who are busily working behind the scenes to ensure the 42nd Australian Nationals is a roaring success on September 14-16.
A host of major event activities will prove a fitting preliminary program for the return of all six Group One category drivers and riders for Queensland's season opening Australian Nationals.
"Willowbank Raceway is all about first class entertainment and our proven track record in showcasing the best of the best is further enhanced by Nationally significant drag racing events being staged prior to the Australian N ationals," said Willowbank Raceway General Manager Steve Bettes.
"The Shannon's Nostalgia Drag Racing Series Nationals, to be held August 19, will highlight the vehicles which pioneered the great sport of drag racing in Australia and this concept already possesses a loyal cult following.
"Then of course we have the Castrol EDGE Fast Fours Jamboree on August 25/26. This is another one of Willowbank Raceway's iconic events that was borne out of a cultural shift within the sport that we've been happy to have catered to since its inception 17 years ago.
"All-in-all these are exciting times for Willowbank Raceway and the entire Ipswich region, as another jam-packed season of drag racing activities moves upon us."
The annual Australian Nationals kicks off a new season for Queensland drag racing and was secured to the State in 2002 with the support of Queensland Events Corporation under its Major Events portfolio.
Such support has allowed Willow bank Raceway to maintain its reputation as one of the premier tracks in Australia.
Willowbank officials will use the 42nd Australian Nationals as an appropriate springboard towards a revamped 10-month program of drag racing events.
While it may be considered the off-season so far as Australian drag racing is concerned, Willowbank Raceway will continue to be a hive of activity leading into the start of the 42nd Australian Nationals on September 14-16.
The Nationals will be preceded by the Fast Four Jamboree on August 25/26, while the Nostalgia drag racing Nationals is also booked in for August 19.
