South Queensland Drag Racing Best In Australia
The reputation of Queensland's Willowbank Raceway continues to be enhanced by the performances of its regular racers on the National drag racing scene.
As the host facility for the South Queensland division of the Australian National Drag Racing Association (ANDRA), regular drivers and riders at Willowbank Raceway have again scooped the pool in a number of prestigious awards.
Foremost is the ANDRA Professional Rac ers Cup which the South Queensland division has continually remained a dominant force since its inception.
Points are allocated for each elimination round victory recorded by any individual racing in the six Group One professional categories.
In total there are 40 series rounds contested, spread over nine events which include Willowbank Raceway's own feature racing program that consists of the Australian Nationals in September (all six Group One categories), annual Top Fuel/Top Alcohol New Year event in January, Tin Top Titles in April (Top Doorslammer/Pro Stock) and the ever popular Winternationals in June (all six Group One categories).
"At Willowbank Raceway we're extremely proud to be a part of the continued success of the South Queensland Division where racers consistently set the benchmark for top level drag racing in Australia," said Willowbank Raceway General Manager Steve Bettes.
"The 2006/07 season saw some impressive individual performa nces by Brisbane's Gary Phillips in claiming the hotly contested Top Doorslammer Australian championship and Dion Prowse doing likewise in Pro Stock Motorcycle.
"We were almost 30 points ahead of New South Wales in the Professional Racers Cup and that is a true testament to the depth of talent we have here across all categories."
In an even greater advertisement for drag racing in southern Queensland, the grassroots category competitors were successful in retaining the ANDRA Shield, where points are also allocated to eliminator winners in Groups two, three and four.
Foremost among the contributors to that points tally was Supercharged Outlaws Australian and Willowbank track champion Daniel Reed of Brisbane.
His efforts across the season saw him as runner-up to Victorian Super Stock driver Bruno Cavallo for the John Storm Memorial trophy awarded to the driver or rider who accrues the greatest number of points from all rounds of the Rocket Allstars Racing Series.
Further testament to the dominance of South Queensland competitors, and to how close the final count was for honours in the John Storm memorial trophy, fellow Willowbank regulars Ross Lemberg, Ross Sacre, Peter Everett and Justin Walshe were all in contention for the title going into the season ending Castrol EDGE Winternationals last month.
Willowbank Raceway will now see their troupe of quarter mile drag racing superstars enjoy a break from competition in readiness for Queensland's 2007/08 season opening 42nd Australian Nationals on September 14-16.
The annual Australian Nationals was secured to Queensland in 2002 with the support of Queensland Events Corporation under its Major Events portfolio.
Such support has allowed Willowbank Raceway to maintain its reputation as one of the premier tracks in Australia.
Willowbank officials will use the 42nd Australian Nationals as an appropriate springboard towards a revamped 10-mon th program of drag racing events.
While it may be considered the off-season so far as Australian drag racing is concerned, Willowbank Raceway will continue to be a hive of activity leading into the start of the 42nd Australian Nationals on September 14-16.
The Nationals will be preceded by the Fast Four Jamboree on August 25/26, while the Nostalgia drag racing Nationals is also booked in for August 19.
